*The Monroe Institute*

The Monroe Institute's origins date to the mid-50s when Robert A. Monroe (1916-1995) initiated research into the use of sound to accelerate learning. By 1958, efficient means had been developed not only to keep the mind awake, but to induce sleep easily and comfortably. While continuing to refine and develop specialized uses of sound, it was discovered that certain patterns of sound induce states of mind that are not otherwise easily accessible. As additional investigation verified the effects of specific sound combinations and frequencies, methods were developed for an individual to maintain and control these states of mind.
